Founded in 1919 by Mrs. Mary Sayão and her husband, President Epitácio Pessoa, Foundation Casa Santa Ignez has a history of social work, having significantly improved the quality of life of thousands of people.
It was Mrs. Sayão, the First Lady, who did the first charity work at Santa Ignez, providing treatment for house maids suffering from tuberculosis. Since that time, the Foundation had the help of the religious women from the Daughters of Saint Anne Congregation, which still plays a fundamental role in our management.
Casa Santa Ignez is a non-profit institution. It is one of the oldest social work institutions in Rio de Janeiro. Its social utility has been officially recognized at the city, state, and federal levels.
From 1986 on, Casa Santa Ignez has decided to focus on the education of low-income children. Since then, we have attended to about 250 children per year. Until 2017, more than 7,500 children have been helped by Casa Santa Ignez.
